Indigenous RWH techniques that are based on traditional knowledge are found to be highly effective in sustaining the livelihoods of people and animals (Machiwal et al., 2018).
Overall, the reasons behind the decline of indigenous RWH include institutional, socioeconomic, climatic, and technical factors. The accessibility of readily available groundwater, rural urban
migration, climate change and role of government are the most frequently cited factors affecting indigenous water harvesting practices.
Indigenous water harvesting systems are usually designed to serve small rural
communities, but they are unlikely to be inadequate for meeting the demands of the increasingly urban populations of the next century.
