Lesson 28
#Lesson28
May the curse of Allah be upon Ibn Marjana; وَ لَعَنَ اللَّهُ ابْنَ مَرْجانَهَ
and may the curse of Allah be upon Umar ibn Sa’ad; وَ لَعَنَ اللَّهُ عُمَرَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ
and may the curse of Allah be upon Shimr. وَ لَعَنَ اللَّهُ شِمْراً
In this part of the text, specific names are given who are worthy of divine curses, contrary to the previous one where names of families/clans have been mentioned.
The three individuals, Ibn Marjana, Umar ibn Sa’ad, and Shimr ibn Dhil Jawshan played important roles in the martyrdom of Imam Hossain and his family and companions, may Allah be pleased with all of them.
If you remember, Ibn Marjana is from the clan of Ziyad. During that time, he was the governor of Basrah and then Kufah. He played a direct and critical role in the execution of Muslim bn ‘Aqil and his sons and he was the one who ordered the massing of troops towards Karbala to either force Imam Hossain’s (PBUH) allegiance to Zayid or to kill him and his supporters.
The father of Umar ibn Sa’ad, Abi Waqqas, was a well-known companion of the Prophet (PBUH&F). Unfortunately, he strayed from the right path and became a servant of Satan after the death of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH&F). His son, Umar ibn Sa’ad, did not do any better and he was cursed by the Holy Prophet and Imam Ali (PBUHT) and even his own father. This cursed son was the commander-in-chief of the entire army that mobilized against Imam Hossain (PBUH) on the plains of Karbala. As a reward for his atrocities, he was promised the post of governor of Ray (presently located in the suburbs of Tehran, Iran). A poem is attributed to him, wherein he said of his predicament:
“Should I give up the government of Ray, which is my ultimate goal and desire to attain?
Or should I return to Kufah, guilty and responsible for the killing of al-Hossain?
And in the killing of him is the Hellfire of which there is nothing to save me.
However, the government of Ray is that thing which brings pleasure to my eyes.”
This poem by Umar ibn Sa’ad shines light on the true nature of his heart. He knew with certainty that the killing of Imam Hossain (PBUH) would earn him eternal damnation and torment but he could not see beyond the temporary pleasures of this world and so he chose the former.
Shimar ibn Dhil Jawshan is the third person cursed in this section. He will forever be known as the one who decapitated/beheaded the head of Imam Hossain (PBUH). He was also a forceful factor in Ibn Ziyad’s rejection of a peace treaty with Imam Hossain (PBUH), and he justified his actions by saying that the killing of Imam Hossain (PBUH) would end all forms of resistance and rebellion against Yazid. Interestingly, Shimr was once a loyal follower of Imam Ali (PBUH) and fought against Mu’awiyah in the Battle of Saffin. But he also lost his way and gave into Satan.
Allah-willing the next post will be on Saturday.
