In the name of the Inclusively Merciful, the Exclusively Merciful Imam Sadiq (pbuh) played a pivotal role in the preservation and spread of Shia Islam and from him emerged a new type of jihad. Imam Sadiq (pbuh) did a quiet revolution, one that for the most part went unnoticed by the oppressive Bani Abbas government yet left a colossal imprint on civilization for centuries to come. He created an intellectual system that not only focused on the increase of knowledge but also the development of morals and spirituality, and the practice of discourse (open discussions). Hence, learning was no longer the memorization of facts, but also critical debates and intellectual discussions that lead to spiritual and moral-cultural development. This new method of teaching and learning held the teachers and learners to a higher standard of morals and spirituality, and not simply the dissemination and collection of knowledge. Thus, a new type of revolution lead by Imam Sadiq (pbuh). And, a new type of jihad was formed, and the duties of the Shia nation became more intense and comprehensive as it now included knowledge, spirituality, and moral-cultural standards. Jihad was extended pass the military field (the smaller jihad) and the individual jihad (jihad al-akbar) and turned into a knowledge-based or cognitive jihad (soft war) that included spiritual and moral-cultural development as well. @TheJourneyToIslam (pbuh)
